The Project

This project is being delivered on the Country of the Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung peoples.

Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park is a spectacular place to go four-wheel driving, picnicking, camping and bushwalking. Through this project, Parks Victoria is improving facilities at popular sites along iconic four-wheel drive routes while helping protect the park’s environmental and cultural values.

Completed upgrades

Strachans Campground

You’ll find Strachans Campground along the iconic Sawmill Track, with easy access to scenic drives, panoramic views, rugged bushland and some of the region’s most rewarding outdoor experiences. Popular with campers and four-wheel drive enthusiasts, this remote campground has been redesigned to offer more options for visitors. The upgrades include:

  • camping options better suited to four-wheel drivers, replacing the previous 8 tent-only sites with 6 vehicle-based sites for caravans, campervans and camper trailers, plus 2 tent-only sites with nearby parking
  • installation of 9 purpose-built fireplaces
  • improved gravel paths, roads and safer campground access
  • bollards and edging to clearly define campgrounds
  • repurposed picnic tables
  • enhanced parking to help protect surrounding native vegetation
  • removal of 6 tonnes of asbestos-contaminated material from the site.

Plan ahead, be bushfire aware and make a booking.

Community contribution

A special thank you to volunteers from the Hamilton District 4WD Club and Wimmera 4WD Club, who spent several weekends working alongside our rangers. Together, they planted more than 140 seedlings to kick-start revegetation at the campground and helped prepare and restore four-wheel drive tracks before and after seasonal road closures.

Their hands-on contribution is a great example of community stewardship and an important part of caring for Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park.

Project benefits

Visitors

The upgrades make Strachans Campground safer and easier to use for campers and four-wheel drive visitors, with clearer site layouts, improved paths and better parking.

Environment

Defined campsites, parking areas and paths help keep people and vehicles in designated areas, reducing impacts on surrounding native vegetation.

Community

The project supports ongoing partnerships with local volunteers and four-wheel drive clubs to care for the park and improve visitor experiences.

Environment and cultural heritage management

Environmental permits, cultural heritage requirements and tree-risk assessments inform planning and delivery. These processes help protect environmental and cultural values throughout the works.

Who are we working with?

We are working with the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, Traditional Owners, local volunteers and four-wheel drive clubs.

Access changes

Seasonal road and track closures may apply across Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park. Obey all signs and check the park page for current conditions and closures before travelling.
