Kanes Bridge, Yarra Bend Park – Temporary closure
Project status
Kanes Bridge is temporarily closed.
Works to Kanes Bridge are scheduled to start on 5 August 2026 and be completed by mid-September 2026. The upcoming works will involve the installation of two supplementary girder beams to reinforce the existing longitudinal beam. The works will be carried out by using rope access techniques.
Recent work revealed the need for further structural assessments of the bridge. Investigations will help ensure the bridge is safe and guide future works. We are working to reinstate access as soon as possible.

During the closure, there will be no pedestrian or bicycle access across the bridge. Barriers will be in place, and an alternate route is available for public use. An alternate walking/cycling route to the other side of the bridge is available via Studley Park Road, the Main Yarra Trail past Dights Falls and Deep Rock Road.

The Project
Recent works have revealed the need for further structural assessments of Kane’s Bridge, Yarra Bend.
Some of the decking planks on the historic Kane’s Bridge were replaced in early June 2026. While doing that work, it was noticed that some of the beams that hold the bridge up appeared to be deteriorating, prompting a detailed engineering inspection.
The inspection found splitting in the beams and a termite infestation, which requires repair and treatment as soon as possible. Until that work is done, the bridge is unsafe for people to use. The safety of visitors is our highest priority, and we appreciate the community’s patience and understanding while this work is carried out. We are working to progress repairs as quickly as possible and intend to reopen the bridge once it is safe to do so.
This project takes place on Wurundjeri Land and the project working group acknowledges that greater engagement with the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation is key to promoting healthy country.
