Mueller Inlet Campground

Base yourself at Mueller Inlet Camp on your Croajingolong adventure. Camp under starry skies at night and lose yourself in birdsong and wilderness by day. Explore the expansive inlet by kayak or canoe. Or check out nearby Thurra River Dunes and historic Point Hicks Lighthouse.

Not too far from Thurra River, Mueller Inlet Camp is a cosy campground nestled on the banks of the Mueller River. Overlooking the pristine inlet, the campground sits among banksia woodland and is protected by extensive sand dunes.

The campground contains 8 unpowered sites, 3 of which are walk-in only. Visitors are advised to bring their own drinking water as none is available on site. Advanced booking periods apply over the summer period and Easter.

Although motor vessels aren't permitted on the inlet, launch a canoe or kayak and paddle upstream to appreciate the pristine beauty of Croajingolong National Park. Nectar-feeding birds hide out among banksias and flowering heath in spring and estuary perch are plentiful throughout the river system.

Further afield, the Thurra River Dunes Walk offer a spectacular stroll through coastal woodland to an ever-changing sand dune system that towers 30-metres over the coast below. Point Hicks Lightstation highlights the unique history of this remote corner of the state, while the seemingly endless stretch of coast follows the length of the park and offers ample walking opportunities.

The campground contains 8 unpowered sites, 3 of which are walk-in only. Visitors are advised to bring their own drinking water as none is available on site.

Advanced booking periods apply over the summer period and Easter. For all other times, availability is released in August and December each year.

Peachtree Creek Reserve

This campground is on the eastern shore of Tamboon Inlet, good for both fishing and bird watching. There is neither vehicle nor walking access to the coast so boats are an excellent way to explore the area. The inlet waters and surrounding forest are part of Croajingolong National Park, where there are other campgrounds available.

Point Hicks Lighthouse

Situated deep within Croajingolong National Park, the Point Hicks Lighthouse now offers a unique holiday experience for those who want to stay in one of the keepers cottages, which are now comfortable, self-contained holiday accommodation.

Elusive Lake

Elusive Lake is another great wander from Wingan Inlet. The unique dune-blocked lake stands out among the tall eucalypts that surround its sandy banks. Reaching a depth of 22 metres in some places, jump in for a refreshing swim before returning to camp.

How to get there

Mueller Inlet Campground

Mueller Inlet Campground is located approximately 39km from Cann River and 6.5-hours drive east of Melbourne. To access the campground, turn off the Princes Highway at Cann River and follow Tamboon Road before turning onto Point Hicks Road. One final turn onto Bald Hills Track will lead you to the quaint campground.

When to go

Like the larger inlets nestled throughout Croajingolong National Park, fishing at Mueller Inlet is best from December through to early May; however, it is one of the few locations in Victoria where fishing can be enjoyed year-round.

Flathead, whiting, yellowfin, bream and perch are most likely to bite from late spring to autumn. Throughout winter large schools of Black Bream make their way into the estuary. And tailor, salmon and trevally are also known to bite throughout June, July and August.

Accessibility

Visiting a park can be more of a challenge for people with disabilities, however in Victoria there are a wide range of facilities to help people of all abilities enjoy our wonderful parks around the state.

Be prepared and stay safe

Croajingolong National Park is in the East Gippsland fire district. Bushfire safety is a personal responsibility. Anyone entering the park during the bushfire season needs to stay aware of forecast weather conditions. Check the Fire Danger Rating and for days of Total Fire Ban at emergency.vic.gov.au, on the Vic Emergency App or call the Vic Emergency Hotline 1800 226 226.

No fires may be lit on Total Fire Ban days. On Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating days this park will be closed for public safety. Closure signs will be erected but do not expect an official warning.

Nature being nature, sometimes conditions can change at short notice. It’s a good idea to check this page ahead of your visit for any updates.

  • Croajingolong National Park

    Point Hicks Road Closure

    Please be advised that Point Hicks Road is currently closed due to ongoing construction works. As a result, there is no access to the following campgrounds and accommodation:
    • Thurra River Campground
    • Mueller Campground
    • Point Hicks Lighthouse
     
    Alternative Camping Options: While Point Hicks Road is closed, alternative camping sites are available at the following locations:
    • Wingan Inlet
    • Tamboon Inlet
    • Peachtree Creek Reserve

    Cicada Trail Closed

    Cicada Trail will remain closed in 2025. 

    Cicada Trail is a seasonally opened 4WD track, it will remain closed due to the closure of the Pt Hicks Road  (from Fishermans Track) whilst the Thurra Bridge is being rebuilt. 

    A reopening date for both Cicada Trail and the Pt Hicks Rd will be advised.  

  • Wingan Inlet Campground (Croajingolong National Park)

    Hazard Trees in Wingan Inlet Campground

    Heavy rainfall and gale force winds have damaged trees in Wingan Inlet Campground on July 2 2025.

    Sites 10 and 11 are now closed due to a large hanger above the camp sites.

    Dangerous areas have been cordoned off with hazard tape. To ensure your safety please do not enter these areas.

    Wingan Inlet Campground Closed July 22 2025 for Hazard tree works

    Wingan Inlet Campground will be closed on Tuesday July 22 while rangers treat hazard trees.

    Please do not access the campsite or visitor facilities on this day.

  • Notices Affecting Multiple Parks

    Ground shooting operations targeting deer

    Control operations (ground shooting) targeting deer are undertaken in this area.  The Park will remain open to visitors during operations.

  • Genoa Peak (Croajingolong National Park)

    Genoa Peak Road -4WD Only

    The Genoa Peak Road is open to 4WD vehicles only and is NOT advised for 2WD vehicles. 
    The road has had major flood damage resulting in wash outs and deep rutting. 
    Genoa Peak Walking Track remains open.

Thurra River Campground

This campground is located in coastal woodland between the river and the ocean near Point Hicks. This is a popular spot for families to relax on hot days.

Wingan Inlet Campground

This campground is in a tall Bloodwood forest on the western shore of Wingan Inlet in a tranquil bush setting.

Shipwreck Creek

This small campground is set in a tall forest above a small secluded cove which is only a 10 minute walk away. It is an excellent base for walks covering both heathland and coastal scenery.
