  • Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens

Dandenong Ranges Gardens - Autumn Foliage Guide

🍁 Dandenong Ranges Gardens – Autumn Foliage Guide
Between March and May the Dandenong Ranges Gardens — including the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden, Alfred Nicholas Memorial Garden, Pirianda Garden, George Tindale Memorial Garden, and R.J. Hamer Arboretum — come alive with stunning autumn colour.

    🌲 When to Visit
Expect larger crowds during autumn, especially on weekends and during the Easter school holidays. For a quieter experience, consider visiting mid-week, early in the morning or later in the afternoon.

    🚗 Parking
On-site parking is limited at each garden site. If car parks are full, we recommend exploring another nearby garden.

    🌳 Prefer a Peaceful Visit?
Try one of these gardens for a quieter experience:
    • Pirianda Garden
    • George Tindale Memorial Garden
    • R.J. Hamer Arboretum
    • Mt Dandenong Arboretum

    🍂 Understanding Autumn Foliage
Because it’s a natural process, the timing and intensity of autumn colours vary each year. Some trees start changing in late March, but the peak display usually occurs from mid-April to early May.
The quality of autumn colour depends on weather conditions:
    • Good rainfall during summer leads to brighter foliage.
    • Dry conditions or warm weather can delay colour change and dull the display.
    • Cool nights and mild days bring out the best colours.
    • Strong winds or heavy rain can shorten the season by removing leaves too early.

    🧭 Accessibility
The garden’s hilly terrain and layout may present challenges for some visitors. While garden paths are sealed and wide, they can be steep. Unassisted wheelchair access is not recommended. The two arboretums only feature unsealed paths.

🚌 Garden Tour Bus (Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden):
A great option for visitors with limited mobility, this paid, one-way audio tour covers the original Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden (not the new Chelsea Australian Garden). Click here for more information.

    🚫 Visitor Guidelines
To protect these special places for everyone, please note:
    • Dogs on lead only
    • No dogs permitted at the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden
    • No bins provided – please carry in, carry out all rubbish.
    • No drones permitted
    • No picking or removing vegetation – leave for others to enjoy!

    🚌 Coach Parking
There is a dedicated coach/bus drop-off zone beside the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden entrance (24 The Georgian Rd, Olinda). Once passengers have exited, coaches should park at the nearby Olinda Pool & Community House Car Park (79-81 Olinda-Monbulk Rd, Olinda), before returning to the same location for passenger collection.

  • Cape Nelson Lighthouse Reserve

    Notification of Marine Algal Bloom

Algal blooms often occur naturally in the waters of Southwest Victoria and are typically low risk to people, pets and wildlife.

Sometimes mistaken as oil or sewage, they can make the water look dark, discoloured or dirty; especially in shallow areas near the shore. You may also notice patches of stained sand where algae can wash up.

The most common species seen along this coastline is Noctiluca scintillans, although many types of algae can form blooms. While most blooms are harmless to people, some may cause skin irritation and illness, so it’s important to take care.

To keep yourself and your pets safe:

    ·         Avoid touching water or sand that you think may be affected by an algal bloom.
    ·         Avoid eating fish, shellfish, mussels or crayfish caught in areas where a bloom is present.
    ·         Direct contact can occasionally cause rashes, itchiness, sore ears or nose, or stomach upset if swallowed.
    ·         If you do come into contact with affected water, rinse skin, hair, clothing and wetsuits with clean water.
    ·         Seek medical or veterinary advice if you have any health concerns.

Autumn 2026 Planned Burns – Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park

Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) has scheduled 3 planned burns within the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park throughout Autumn 2026.

During these burning operations, there may be temporary closures to visitor sites, campgrounds, walking tracks and roads within Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park to allow for on ground burn operations and the safe movement of vehicles, heavy machinery and aircraft.

Closures will remain in place temporarily, for the duration of ignition, the following 12-24 hours, or until the whole burn unit is declared ‘safe’- this period of time could be one day or multiple days.

The re-opening of roads, walking tracks and visitor sites will be communicated by FFMVic once burn areas have been assessed and declared ‘safe’. Until then visitors are urged to follow the advice of on ground signage and remain clear of burning operations.

Planned Burns within the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park – Autumn 2026

Please refer to the attached Autumn 2026 Planned Burns map.

    Dunkeld – Cooks Rd

4km NW of Dunkeld, 216 ha

Objective - To develop a fuel reduced area to the North-west of Dunkeld.

This burn will see a temporary disruption during ignition to Mount Sturgeon summit (from Victoria Valley road and the park boundary south of the summit) including the Grampians Peaks Trail (GPT section S4). A detour will be in place to allow walkers access between Victoria Valley Trailhead, Mount Sturgeon car park and Dunkeld, via the Dunkeld loop walk.

    Grampians NP - Pomonal Fireline

2km NW of Pomonal, 230 ha

Objective - To develop a fuel reduced area to the North-west of Pomonal.

Boronia Peak Trail, Tunnel Walling Track and Pomonal Fireline will be closed during burning operations.

The Fyans Creek Loop walk will remain open between Delleys Bridge and Brambuk the National Park and Cultural Centre, as will the Terraces Fireline to Lake Bellfield and Barri-Yalug Hike in Campground.

Grampians NP - Mt Zero Rd - South

    3km N of Halls Gap, 130 ha

Objective - To develop a fuel reduced area to the North of Halls Gap.

Mt Difficult Fireline (North of the Watchtower area), and Mt Zero Rd (between Pines Rd to Red Gum Lease Track) will be closed but will have detours in place.

The Grampians Peaks Trail from Mt Difficult Road (south of Werdug) to Halls Gap may have a detour in place via Mt Difficult Road, Boroka Lookout to Halls Gap.

The Watchtower Climbing Area will be temporarily closed.

Planned burning is a carefully planned and controlled process where fire is used to reduce dry vegetation such as leaves and branches that can build up over time and make forests more flammable. Without planned burning and other bushfire risk management works, bushfires will be bigger and harder for our firefighters to control.

Autumn typically provides FFMV more opportunities to conduct planned burns, as the weather is more stable, and fire behaviour tends to be manageable and predictable. As soon as favourable weather and forest conditions arrive, we’ll make sure all available resources are delivering planned burning. Visit the Planned Burns Victoria website before you travel to make sure your trip isn’t affected.

Mackenzie Falls (Migunang wirab) – Closed for major construction works – 9 February 2026 to midyear 2026

Construction work at Mackenzie Falls in the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park is underway and the carpark and precinct is closed to visitors.

The works at Mackenzie Falls precinct includes the construction of a new viewing platform at the base of the falls, upgrades to the carpark and the Bluff Lookout Walk and other important safety improvements to stabilise rock and improve walking tracks.

The Mackenzie Falls carpark and all walking tracks in the precinct including Broken Falls Walk, Mackenzie Falls Walk to the base (from the carpark) and the Bluff Lookout Walk are all closed. We anticipate that construction work will finish in the second half of the year.

The carpark will be a construction site throughout the works period with large machinery operating and materials being stored on site.  There will be no access for all vehicles or visitors at Mackenzie Falls Precinct during construction.

    Zumsteins Picnic Area Parking
During construction parking at the popular Zumsteins picnic area will be limited. It is not recommended for large passenger coaches and long caravans to visit during construction. Similarly, they should not travel between Mackenzie Falls and Zumsteins due to the narrow winding road.

A small amount of parking for campervans, small motorhomes and cars with trailers is available opposite the Zumsteins Picnic Area car park, however, may not be available on busy weekends and public holidays.

Zumsteins to Fish Falls – This popular walk to the beautiful Fish Falls is a 1.5 to 2 hour return walk (Grade 3) – walkers should have a reasonable fitness level, carry water and wear sturdy walking shoes as the track can be rocky with uneven surfaces and some steep sections.

Mackenzie River Walk – There will be no access to the base of Mackenzie Falls from Zumsteins Picnic Area from 27 April 2026 until construction works are complete. Fish Falls will still be accessible from Zumsteins Picnic Area.

Rockclimbing Access Changes - Centurion Walls, Tortoise Wall

Re-discovery of cultural heritage at two designated rock-climbing sites in Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park has resulted in temporary changes to access.

    Centurion Walls
Significant Aboriginal cultural values were rediscovered at Lower Centurion in late 2025. As a result, a partial closure is now in place, ensuring cultural heritage protection while maintaining modified climbing access for visitors. On-ground signage at the access track clearly delineates where climbing is or isn’t permitted.

    Visitors are advised:
    • Access is closed from the area north of and including Damage Done. These sites include:
Damage Done, Shades of Black, Liberator, Lexicon, Temuujin, Killer Wolf, Devilled Haircut, Compressor route, Anti-Christ Superstar, Pining for the Fiords, Unknown Route 2, Genghis Khan, Project KP2, Project KP, Kublai Khan, Stone Temptress, Psychotic Episode, Trail of the dead, Flood the Zone, Push it Upstairs, Progressive Happy House.

    • All climbs south of and including In Plain Sight remain open. These climbs include; In Plain Sight, Who Dreams of Cats, Who Dreams of Cats – short,  Nowhere to Hide, Afterworld, Left Hand Black, Centrifugal Force, Centrifugal Force – Romanes Eunt Domas (linkup), Romanes Eunt Domas, Black Nobility, Sandpit, Ton Steine Scherben, Winged Corpse, HCP, Massacres and Maniacs, Lunchbox Legend, and AA New Rope / New route.

    • Access to Upper Centurion remains unchanged and is via the south end near Winged Corpse.

    Tortoise Wall
We’re currently asking visitors to not access the area known as ‘Tortoise Wall’ to avoid causing potential harm to Aboriginal cultural heritage that was rediscovered in April 2026. A temporary closure is now in place, while Parks Victoria and Gariwerd Traditional Owners determine a longer-term management response. Out of respect for this significant cultural landscape, visitors are requested to not access this area.

Gap Track - Closed between Pinnacle Track and O’Toole Creek

    What?
Gap Track, between Pinnacle Track and O’Toole Creek, is closed.
    • There is no vehicle access to Gap Track directly from Eildon Jaimeson Road. By vehicle, Gap Track must be accessed from Pinnacle Track (when seasonally open), Jerusalem Creek Track, and Simms Track only.
    • By vehicle, the shortest way back to the bitumen from this location is via the Simms Track connector to Eildon Jamieson Road.
    Why?
This is to protect O'Toole Creek from damage by vehicles fording the creek, as the bridge over O'Toole Creek has failed. O'Toole Creek flows directly into White Creek which is home to the critically endangered Spotted Tree Frog. Spotted Tree Frogs are threatened by loss of vegetation on creek banks, and by sediment in waterways.
    When will it be re-opened?
Gap Track, between Pinnacle Track and O’Toole Creek, will be re-opened when a bridge or protected creek crossing are installed. There is no timeframe for this replacement.
What about O’Toole Flat Camping Area
This small camping area has been re-opened. It is accessible by vehicle from Eildon Jamieson Road only, and is designed for self-sufficient visitors. It is recommended for 4WDs with small camping set-ups; long vehicles and towing vehicles are not recommended.

    Main Ramp Closed

  • Narrawong Coastal Reserve

Completion of works is expected in May 2026, subject to weather and site conditions.

We thank you for your understanding and patience during these essential preparation works and throughout the construction period. These works are necessary to ensure long-term stability and protection of the creek edge for the safety of the community and waterway users.

Parks Victoria will continue to provide updates as this project makes progress.

  • Shallow Inlet Marine and Coastal Park

    Invasive Species Control Programs 2025 - 2027

Wilsons Promontory National Park will be conducting invasive species control programs from 1 July 2025 – 30 June 2027. Introduced species such as deer, rabbits, foxes and feral cats are all major threats to nature.
By removing introduced hog deer and rabbits, we are reducing grazing pressure on the incredible variety of native plants and plant communities, including some that are nationally threatened. By targeting foxes and feral cats, we are reducing the threat of predation for native species such as the Southern Brown Bandicoot, Long-nosed Potoroo, Ground Parrot, New Holland Mouse, Eastern Pygmy Possum and the Hooded Plover.
All animal control programs are carried out under strict conditions, compliant with all relevant legislation, Codes of Practice and Standard Operating Procedures, designed to ensure safe, effective, and humane practices are implemented.
For further information, please visit Prom Sanctuary.

  • Snowy River National Park

Temporary Closures and Altered Track Conditions on the Snowy River National Park 4WD Track Network.

The steep section of the Deddick Trail between Moonkan Track and Mountain Creek which is known as the Mt Joan Staircase is in very poor condition with very deep rutting and erosion trenches.  This section of track has been deemed unsafe to drive and will remain closed to the public until further notice.

Parts of the Deddick Trail are also subject to very thick Wattle and Eucalyptus regrowth and this is particularly predominant over the Mt Gelantipy Plateau.  I this area, regrowth has encroached on the track to the point where it will damage passing vehicles and makes the track unsafe to navigate due to severely restricted sight lines and very limited opportunities to turn vehicles.

For the above reasons, Deddick Trail will be closed from the intersection with Rich Knob Track to the intersection with Bowen Track.

A through route between McKillops Bridge and Yalmy Rd exists along the Snowy Icon 4WD route via Deddick Trail, Bowen Track, Bowen Link Track, Monkeytop Track and Waratah Flat Rd. However, sections of this track network have deteriorated to the point where this route should be considered DOUBLE BLACK difficulty.  Sections of the track network will be very difficult in dry weather and should only be attempted by experienced drivers travelling in groups with high clearance, dual range 4WD vehicles carrying recovery equipment.  This route will be easier on vehicles and drivers if driven in the opposite direction to what is described in the Snowy River Icon 4WD route brochure - starting from Yalmy Rd and finishing at McKillops Bridge

The Snowy River Icon 4WD route brochure can be found on the 4WD Victoria Website at: https://www.4wdvictoria.org.au/iconic4wd/index.php/homepage/snowy-river-drive

  • William Ricketts Sanctuary

William Ricketts Sanctuary - Temporary Closure

William Ricketts Sanctuary was extensively damaged by a cyclogenesis storm event in June 2021. Many sculptures, buildings, pathways, and handrails were destroyed by numerous large fallen Mountain Ash trees.

Our highest priority is public and staff safety, and this site remains too dangerous for the public to enter. Works are continuing to make the Sanctuary safe for Parks Victoria and its contractors to continue the recovery process.

Recovery works are continuing at William Ricketts Sanctuary (following the storm), and they include the removal of large fallen and hazardous trees, perimeter fencing repairs, underground utility service reconnections and other important building, asset and facility works (including repairs to or removal of damaged buildings, retaining walls and associated infrastructure). Recovery works for William Ricketts Sanctuary are funded through insurance.

Parks Victoria is continuing to make the site safe to re-open, but it is going to take longer than other sites due to the sheer scale of the damage and the artistic and cultural importance of the sculptures. At this stage, there is no specific date when the Sanctuary will re-open.

We understand it’s disappointing that William Ricketts Sanctuary remains closed, and we are grateful to the local community, our stakeholders and visitors for their patience and continued priority to keep safe by staying outside of these closed areas.

Please continue to refer to the Parks Victoria website for up-to-date information relating to closures and change of conditions.

Whilst the Sanctuary remains closed, Parks Victoria recommends visitors explore other Dandenong Ranges Garden properties, including the nearby Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden, Pirianda Garden, Alfred Nicholas Memorial Garden or George Tindale Memorial Garden.  Further information for each garden can be found on this website.

    Tidal River General Store update

The General Store will close from 28 April 2026 for a few weeks to help prepare for a new operator. While the store is closed, no supplies will be available for purchase at Tidal River.

As we prepare for this transition, the range of pantry items and souvenirs will be limited. Visitors are encouraged to bring everything they need for their stay where possible.

Essential items such as bread, milk, ice and gas will be available until 27 April 2026, along with coffee and a limited takeaway food menu.

If additional supplies are needed, the nearest supermarket is located in Yanakie, around a 30 minute drive from Tidal River. The next nearest supermarkets are in Foster, Meeniyan and Leongatha.

Tour operators, event organisers and school groups will need to arrange alternative catering providers.

These changes are part of a transition to a new store operator, aimed at improving the visitor experience at Wilsons Promontory National Park.

    Fox and Cat Control

Fox and Feral Cat Control Program – Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area, Bunyip State Park and Kurth Kiln Regional Park.
Parks Victoria strives to protect Victoria’s special places. This includes the control of introduced plant and animal species. As part of an ongoing strategy, notice is hereby given that Parks Victoria will be laying buried baits containing Sodium Monofluoroacetate (1080 poison) and PAPP (4-aminopropiophenone) on public land for the control of foxes. Parks Victoria will also be deploying Canid Pest Ejector bait stations containing Sodium Monofluoroacetate (1080 poison) PAPP (4-aminopropiophenone) on public land for the control of foxes. Humane trap cages will be used for controlling feral cats.
Baits containing 1080 poison will be laid from November 2025 to July 2026.
These works will assist in protecting threatened animals such as the Helmeted Honeyeater, Lowland Leadbeater’s Possum, Southern Brown Bandicoots, Broad tooth rat and Glossy Grass Skinks from predation by foxes and cats.
Bait and Trapping Stations will be laid at strategic sites, and other known areas of fox and cat habitat, within the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area, Bunyip State Park and Kurth Kiln Regional Park.
Notification signage will be posted throughout the Pest Animal Control areas and members of the public who are living, visiting, or working in the above-named areas are advised to take particular care not to disturb or interfere with bait stations or cages. While domestic dogs and cats are particularly susceptible to 1080 and PAPP poisons, they are not permitted in Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area or Bunyip State Park and dogs must be always on lead when in Kurth Kiln Regional Park.
